The Safari Gravel Race delivered a landmark edition yesterday, set against the dramatic high-altitude backdrop of Hell’s Gate National Park. For the first time in the event’s history, African riders claimed victory in both elite races on the demanding 100 km long route
Black Mamba team dominates the men’s race
The elite men’s race turned into a showcase of strength from the Black Mambe Development Team, as the Kenyan squad delivered an excellent collective performance.
After a fast and tactical race through the rugged terrain and thin mountain air, Lawrence Lorot from Uganda proved strongest in the decisive sprint, edging out teammate Stanley Ngugi (KEN) in a tight two-man finish. Ivan Kipruto (KEN) completed an all-Black Mambe podium, crossing the line 18 seconds behind the leading duo.
The historic clean sweep underlines the rapid progression of local African talent, particularly from Kenya’s growing gravel and endurance cycling programme.
Nyirarukundo takes emotional revenge
The elite women’s race provided just as much drama, with Rwanda’s Claudette Nyirarukundo claiming victory after an intense sprint finish against Canada’s Sarah Diekmeyer in one of the closest finishes of the day.
For Nyirarukundo, the win carried extra significance. After finishing second in last year’s edition, she stepped up to take the top spot this time, confirming her status as one of Africa’s leading gravel riders.
Austria’s Theresa Rindler-Bach completed the podium in 4:27:23
A milestone for African gravel racing
This year’s Safari Gravel Race will be remembered as a turning point. The double African victory — led by a dominant Kenyan men’s team and a breakthrough performance from Nyirarukundo — signals a new chapter for the sport on the continent.
