Vermeersch Strikes Gold After a 125km attack

Florian Vermeersch finally captured the gold medal he’d long pursued, delivering a masterful performance in the men’s elite race that ended with a powerful solo victory. This win comes after previously securing two silver medals.

The race in the Zuid-Limburg landscape started quickly. While an initial move by Swift, Hermans, and Reinderink was quickly neutralized, the day’s decisive break formed soon after. Vice world champion Vermeersch was joined by Dutch national champion Frits Biesterbos, Germany’s Nils Politt, and Belgium’s Floris Van Tricht. With 125km to go, the quartet established a gap that remained around 30 to 40 seconds—a lead that the chasing peloton, surprisingly, could not close.

As the kilometers passed, the pace began to fracture the breakaway. Politt was the first to fall back, followed by Van Tricht, who couldn’t maintain the pace on the demanding, short climbs. This left Vermeersch and Biesterbos alone at the front.

In the reduced chase group, which included big names like Matej Mohoric (the 2023 World Champion), Tom Pidcock, and Wellens, Mohoric managed to launch a counter-attack with Felix Stehli and Timo Kielcih to distance themselves from the others.

The final decision unfolded as everyone anticipated the action on the Bronsdalweg. However, Vermeersch launched his final attack on one of the shorter, steep climbs just before the finish split. He quickly gained a 10-second advantage, but Biesterbos remained close for another 5km.

After the Bronsdalweg, Vermeersch finally broke the elastic, slowly increasing his lead to 30 seconds. He then had the luxury of enjoying the final stretch on the “Groene Loper” in Maastricht, securing the well-deserved gold after his incredible long-range effort.

Frits Biesterbos was a surprising second, earning silver. Matej Mohoric rounded out the podium with bronze, finishing just ahead of Van Tricht, Stehli, Pidcock, and Wellens.
