The Wörthersee Gravel Race premiere in 2024 was a huge success. After two months, the event was sold out, and the iconic German Racer Caroline Schiff stated in her podcast AUTSAID that it was the best-organized gravel race in Europe that she had ever taken part in.   Lars year, the second edition was won by Magnus Bak Klaris and Geerike Schreurs.

Course

The course is designed on the south side of Velden am Worthersee and the lake with a 78km startloop and a slightly different 72km second loop for all young categories.  Men over 60 and women over 50 have a smaller 15km loop to finish for their total race distance of 94km (one big loop, one small loop). Start and finish are located in the city center of Velden am Worthersee at the Seecorso with a nice view on the lake.

The first 11km have been updated with a big climb starting after 2km where riders climb during 4km to cover an elevation of 150m with especially a steep first kilometer on gravel to spread up the group after the start.

A major part of the course is designed at the borders of the Drau river and the connecting channel.

Apart from the climb that riders need to pass in the start, two other climbs are spread on course with the final one again the startclimb in reverse direction.

Profile

Total elevation over the two laps is 1713m with a first loop containing more climbing than the second loop.  The shorter distance for the older categories has 1182m of climbing.

Start and finish at the lake are at the lowest point of the course at 450m above sea level.  The highest point on course is  reached after 28km and again after 99km at an altitude of 620m above sea.

WORTHERSEE

The Wörthersee lake in southern Austria is located in between the cities of Klagenfurt and Villach at only 15km from the Slovenian border.  The lake area in Austrian Carinthia is a famous holiday destination in both summer and winter time with focus on outdoor sport (hiking, biking, swimming, golf, …) but also on wellness and lifestyle.  The Pyramidenkogel is the world’s highest wooden lookout tower and has the highest slide in Europe.

The area with Velden, Pörtschach and Krumpendorf on the north shore and the lake valley Keutschach on the south side as biggest destinations has a calendar of activities all year round.
