AVEZZANO ABRUZZO

Avezzano, though modern and rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1915 and Allied bombings in World War II, is the main city in the Marsica area of Abruzzo. Its central location makes it an excellent base for exploring the region’s rich tourism, blending history, nature, and culture.

Avezzano

  • Orsini-Colonna Castle: A symbol of the city, this 15th-century castle, though partially restored after the earthquake, stands as a testament to Avezzano’s medieval history. It’s a must-see for architecture and history buffs.

  • Cathedral of San Bartolomeo: Rebuilt in a Neo-Renaissance style, it features beautiful mosaics and is an example of the city’s resilience.

  • Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietraquaria: Located on the slopes of Mount Salviano, this sanctuary holds religious significance and offers panoramic views over the Fucino plain.

  • Villa Torlonia and the Museum of Rural Civilization: The Villa Torlonia park is a pleasant green space, and the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into local rural life and traditions, heavily influenced by the draining of Lake Fucino.

  • Claudius’ Tunnels (Cunicoli di Claudio): An impressive feat of Roman engineering, these tunnels are remnants of Emperor Claudius’ attempt to drain Lake Fucino. They showcase ancient ingenuity and are now an archaeological park.

Abruzzo

The true tourism wealth of Avezzano lies in its immediate surroundings and its proximity to the natural parks of Abruzzo:

  • National and Regional Parks: Avezzano is ideally located for accessing some of Italy’s most beautiful parks:

    • Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise): One of Italy’s oldest and most important parks, renowned for its wildlife (Marsican brown bears, wolves, chamois) and alpine landscapes. It offers countless opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and mountain sports.

    • Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park (Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino): Less known but equally splendid, it offers diverse landscapes, hiking trails, caves, and charming medieval villages.

    • Mount Salviano Nature Reserve (Riserva Naturale Monte Salviano): Right next to Avezzano, this is an excellent spot for easy walks, hiking, and enjoying the local flora and fauna with stunning views of the Fucino plain.

  • Archaeological Sites:

    • Alba Fucens: Just a few kilometers north of Avezzano, this Roman archaeological site is exceptional. You can explore the remains of an amphitheater, forum, baths, and temples, offering a fascinating journey into the region’s Roman past.

  • Villages and Traditions: The region is dotted with small, hilltop medieval villages that offer a glimpse into traditional Abruzzese life, with their ancient churches, castles, and local festivals.

  • Fucino Plain: Once a large lake, this fertile plain is now a “giant vegetable garden” and a unique example of human engineering. While primarily agricultural, it offers flat, open landscapes contrasting with the surrounding mountains.

  • Outdoor Activities: The region is a paradise for outdoor activities: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, bird watching, and in winter, skiing at nearby resorts.
