Namibia’s Alexander Miller and South Africa’s Hayley Preen claimed the elite men’s and women’s titles at the CAC Gravel African Championships, held for the second consecutive year as part of the renowned Khomas100 on Saturday.
The 140 km race from Windhoek to the Gross Barmen Resort once again provided a spectacular setting for Africa’s premier gravel championship, attracting riders from across the continent to battle over Namibia’s fast and demanding gravel roads.
In the men’s race, defending champion Alexander Miller successfully retained both his Khomas100 title and African champion’s jersey. After a hard-fought race that saw a select group at the front, the outcome was decided in a sprint between Miller and South African Marco Joubert. Racing on home soil, Miller proved strongest in the final dash to the line, repeating the achievement that earned him the African title twelve months ago.
Joubert took the silver medal, while Uganda’s Jordan Schleck Ssekanwegi secured the bronze medal after crossing the finish line 4 minutes and 51 seconds behind the leading duo.
The women’s race produced a dominant display from pre-race favourite Hayley Preen. The South African rode away from her rivals to claim both the Khomas100 victory and the African championship title with an impressive 13:07 winning margin.
Behind her, Namibia’s Vera Looser and South Africa’s Anri Greeff battled for the remaining podium places. Looser won in the sprint for second place, earning the silver medal, while Greeff completed the podium in third.
