The rugged terrain of Northwest Arkansas played host to another thrilling edition of the Highlands Gravel Classic this Saturday, an American qualifier that has been a cornerstone of the UCI Gravel World Series since its inception. The demanding Ozark Mountain course witnessed captivating battles in both the men’s and women’s elite races, ultimately seeing Skyler Taylor and Crystal Anthony winning the event.
In the women’s race, experience proved to be important as Crystal Anthony powered to a hard-fought victory. After spending the majority of the race in a lead group alongside Jenna Rinehart and Laura King, Anthony launched a decisive attack on the final climb, a mere 13 miles from the finish line. Last year’s winner Rinehart stayed close, but Anthony managed to stay in front to cross the line with a slender 10-second advantage over Rinehart. King eventually rolled in for third place, 3 minutes and 36 seconds behind.
Anthony’s victory marks her second triumph at the Highlands Gravel Classic, having also claimed the top spot in 2023 while last year’s winner Jenna Rinehart now finished as runner-up. In a remarkable testament to their enduring strength and skill, all three podium finishers are over the age of 40.
The men’s elite race delivered a great battle that was decided in a sprint finish. Skyler Taylor and Tim McBirney went toe-to-toe after a grueling day in the saddle, navigating the challenging climbs and descents of the Ozarks. In the final moments, Taylor managed to edge out his fellow American in a close sprint, securing the coveted victory. The duo had built a significant gap over the rest of the field, with Kyle Kalish finishing solo in third place, 1 minute and 57 seconds behind the leading pair.
